Are truck accidents increasing?

It is common for New Jersey drivers to feel a little nervous when driving near semi-trucks on the highway, no matter how experienced they are behind the wheel.

This is a valid response. After all, collisions with these massive vehicles are incredibly dangerous – and often fatal – for drivers of passenger vehicles. According to recent reports, the risk of such collisions is only increasing.

Fatal truck accidents only increasing over the years

A recent report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determined that the number of fatal truck accidents increased by 1% in 2019 and reached the highest point in the last 30 years.

How significant is a one-percent increase? In 2018, there were 4,136 fatalities in truck accidents. An increase of one percent brings that number up to 4,177 deaths. This increasing rate might not seem too alarming, but it is critical to note that even the slightest increase in the risk of a fatal truck accident is dangerous for any driver on the road.

Nonfatal truck accidents are increasing too

Additionally, the National Safety Council (NSC) notes that truck accidents resulting in injury are on the rise, with roughly 112,000 trucks involved in such collisions in 2018. Along with the risk of fatality, truck accidents also carry a serious risk of life-changing injuries, such as:

  • Traumatic brain injuries;
  • Spinal cord injuries and paralysis; and
  • Amputation or disfigurement.

Whether or not a truck accident is fatal, it can have a catastrophic effect on one’s family.

Drivers must be on their guard

Even though there might be fewer vehicles out on New Jersey roads nowadays, drivers must not overlook safety measures, especially near large trucks. All drivers should ensure they follow safe driving tips and:

  • Drive defensively around semi-trucks;
  • Give themselves space when driving near or passing trucks; and
  • Do not drive distracted.

Commercial truck drivers have just as much – if not more – responsibility to share the road safely with other motorists. However, if drivers take measures to preserve their safety, they may also prevent a serious accident.
